The University of Ioannina was founded in 1964 in Ioannina, Epirus. Today it has 19 departments with over 400 faculty members, 12,000 undergraduate students and more than 800 graduate students. The Unit of Medical Technology & Intelligent Information Systems (MedLab) is a highly innovative and self-contained research unit which resides at the Department of Computer Science of UOI.  The Unit has participated either as a coordinator or as played a major R&D role in IST projects: USBone, PLACEBO, INFACE, NOESIS, CARDITIS etc. The Unit employs 5 postdoc fellows, 35 postgraduate students, 42 senior engineers and administration staff.

The main role of the UOI in POCEMON is the diagnostic software development and technical R&D to genomic microarrays of HLA-typing. It will develop Intelligent Algorithms for the Analysis of Microarray Images along with Genomic Diagnosis using HLA genes.
